Hi all,
W have a seminar this Friday the 17th, at 3pm in the Milgate Room.
It is entitled:
"Everywhere but Nowhere": the living conditions of homeless youth in
Canberra
The presenter is: Justin Barker
My research examines the central factors that shape the lives of homeless
youth in Canberra, providing ethnographic, qualitative research insights
into the lives of homeless youth. Accounts of youth homelessness often
simplify this social issue by overemphasizing either structural or
individualistic aspects, blaming external circumstances and conditions or
pathologising individuals. My research problematises such explanations of
homelessness and demonstrates that the lifestyle and practices of homeless
youth and their external conditions of existence are mutually supportive, as
homeless youth adapt or adjust to the demands of homelessness.
In this post-fieldwork presentation I will give an overview of my research,
theoretical influences and concerns, and the core conclusion of my thesis:
that the lives of homeless youth are organised or structured by instability.
Finally, I will give an outline of the living conditions of homeless youth
in Canberra in order to provide insights into the instability of their
external conditions of existence and is internalized as the primary
disposition of youth homelessness, the disposition of instability.
see you there,
