BEYOND AUTHENTICITY (?):
Native Islam in Contemporary South Sulawesi, Indonesia
Faried F. Saenong (Anthropology, RSPAS)
Islamic practices all over the world show diversity at least in treating
local practices and cultures. Local characters (history, sociality and
contemporary development) have been the main catalyst in creating local
Islam. Taking the case of Islam in Bantaeng (South Sulawesi), this thesis
will examine how local Islamic practices appear as a result of both
accommodative approach to religion and culture, or contestation of
religion (Islam) and local culture. Islamized practices and ‘localized’
ones will be two genres of practices that I will explore in this thesis.
Moreover, I argue that Islam in South Sulawesi is unique and is not
well-represented in works on Indonesian Islam. It brings together the
issue of authenticity since this issue has been a ‘measure’ to be a good
adherer to a religion.
