Seminar Room B, (Arndt Room) Coombs Building, ANU
Abstract
With the enactment of the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act (IPRA) in 1997,
the Philippines led Asia in formally recognising the rights of
indigenous peoples. Ten years on, many challenges face indigenous
communities in realising and benefiting from such rights. Earlier in
2007, the Philippine Working Group for Community Resource Management, a
group of professionals and practitioners from the government, NGOs,
donor institutions, development groups, academe, and research centers,
facilitated by ESSC, met to take stock of current issues and areas for
future action on IPRA. Peter will share some of the findings and
priorities identified by the group in the context of his own experience
and work in the Philippines.
