Hi all,

Welcome to semester two. We still have a seminar vacancy available for this
semester on the 28th of September. Next week on the 27th of July, in the
Milgate Room at 3pm, we have a guest lecture by Michael Humphrey, Professor
of Sociology at the University of Sydney, entitled: 'Human Rights and
Victims' Politics under neo-liberal democracy in Argentina and South Africa'
- hope to see you all there.

This Friday, the 20th of July in the Milgate Room at 3pm, we have the first
of our student seminars. The presenter will be Justin Barker and his
seminar is entitled:

Everywhere but Nowhere: the Living Conditions of Homeless Youth in Canberra

Where do homeless youth sleep in Canberra? What do their lives look like?

Homeless youth are on "the other side of the tracks, not the other side of
the world" (Hall 2003:6) yet very few of us know anything about the lives of
these people. In my post-fieldwork presentation I will explore the
accommodation options that are available to the homeless youth who live in
Canberra. My presentation notes the interdependence between the conditions
of existence of homeless youth and their way of being in the world, in
short, their habitus. In particular, my research examines the
interrelationship between the lives of homeless youth and the three primary
structuring dispositions of youth homelessness: transience/instability;
subjective perception of viable options; and the tension between
self-reliance and dependence. It is these three dispositions which form the
basis for exploring the theoretical divisions of structure/agency,
choice/constraint, and resistance/submission.

Hope to see you all there.

Yours truly,
