CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY POSITION -- MCMASTER UNIVERSITY

The Department of Anthropology at McMaster University invites
applications for a tenure-stream faculty position in Cultural
Anthropology at the Assistant Professor level. The ideal candidate will
complement the department’s commitment to critical, empirical research
and the cultural anthropology section’s emphasis on the relationships
between culture, power, and representation. We especially welcome
applicants doing research in an ethnographically-grounded manner with
questions relating to the politics of culture, history, identity, and
their representations. Subjects in this concentration could include
cultural perspectives on memory, event, and time; cultural practices of
exploring pasts and imagining futures; the intersection between
religion and identity; social justice; and the politics of
commemoration. The successful candidate will be well versed in social
theory and innovative yet grounded methodologies. Geographical area is
open, although preference will be given to candidates with
transnational interests and areas of specialization that complement
current faculty strengths. The candidate selected for this position
will be expected to teach undergraduate lecture and seminar courses in
cultural anthropology, contribute to MA and PhD teaching and
supervision, carry out an active research program leading to
peer-reviewed publications, and take on administrative
responsibilities. The candidate hired will be joining a department with
graduate programs in cultural anthropology, archaeology, biological
anthropology, and the anthropology of health, and with a strong
tradition of collegiality and collaboration. Preference will be given
to candidates whose research complements and extends the department's
current strengths.
All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian
citizens and permanent residents will be considered first for this
position. McMaster is strongly committed to employment equity within
its community and to recruiting a diverse faculty and staff. The
University encourages applications from all qualified candidates,
including women, members of visible minorities, Aboriginal persons,
members of sexual minorities, and persons with disabilities.
Applications should include a curriculum vitae, the names and
addresses (including email) of three referees, a statement of research
interests and plans, and a statement of teaching philosophy and should
be sent in electronic format, though an additional hard copy may be
sent by regular mail. Letters of application should address how
candidates are prepared to engage in the supervision of graduate
students. Submit applications to:
