Abstract
The struggle for human rights and democracy in Burma led by Daw Aung San
Suu Kyi has attracted international attention, particularly following the
hostile military government’s attacks on her as a Burmese woman in public
with her opposition and resistance to the ruling male-dominated authority
and her struggle against the militarized regime. Militarization of Burma
and gender based discrimination and exploitation continue to impact on
women during their migration journey in Thailand and else where. My thesis
discusses the militarization of Burma and its impact on changes in Burmese
society, particularly on women and gender relations and how individual
suffering highlights structural inequalities. In this seminar I will
discuss based on my field work in Thailand how migration influences
changing gender roles and sexuality, refiguring the social displacements
and economic disparities surrounding labour mobility.
