History (School of Social Sciences) Seminar

In 596 AD pope Gregory the Great dispatched a mission to reclaim the
former diocese of Britannia for the Roman see via the conversion of the
pagan Anglo-Saxon polities now controlling most of it. This process was
eventually successful, but at the outset largely ignored the long
established structures of the British, Scottish and Pictish churches,
precipitating a century and a half of ecclesiastical conflict that was
often cast in terms of ethnic vituperation. This seminar examines how
the ethno-religious conflict was reflected in the (juicy) writings of a
selection of clerical authors of the period, and comments briefly on
interaction with current political situations and on the conflict's
effects on ethnic portrayal in the later histories.
