Hi all,
We have a pre-fieldwork seminar this Friday, the 12th of October at 3pm in
the Milgate Room, AD Hope. The presenter is John White. And his paper is
entitled:
"Aboriginal engagements with the NSW south coast economy".
Abstract
The localised nature and variety of Aboriginal participation in the
Australian economy has been largely neglected in the anthropological and
historical literature. Recently, Altman's hybrid economy model has
stimulated interest in the kinds of relationships that exist at the nexus of
customary, market and state sectors. Applications of this model have
primarily focused on 'remote' settlements: where the state appears as a
ubiquitous backdrop to social and economic relations. Indigenous and
non-indigenous interrelations and interactions occurring within
intercultural spaces (cf Merlan; Altman), draws into question notions of
boundedness and transformation and provides, as Hinkson suggests, the
impetus to reconceptualise Aboriginal subjectivities.
The proposed research moves away from a 'remote' locus, and aims to situate
the emerging literature in the peri-urban setting of the Eurobodalla shire.
Aboriginal participation in the economy of the south coast has strong
interlinkages with past processes, stemming from particular modalities of
colonial expansion and associated labour shortages. The development and
subsequent demise of a seasonal work cycle, employing Aboriginal people in a
variety of highly seasonal and transient industries, draws into question the
variety of economic hybridities and the character of the associated
intercultural relations.
