The School of Archaeology and Anthropology is advertising two
new positions, both for three years commencing first semester 2008. The
details of the first is given below, those for the second will be
available shortly.
Medical Anthropologist
Academic Level B

Salary Range: $66,764 - $78,772 pa plus 17% super

The Australian National University is establishing a Master's
program in Culture, Health and Medicine as a joint initiative of the
College of Arts and Social Sciences and the College of Health and
Medical Sciences. This will be an interdisciplinary program taught
across both colleges. To coordinate this program, the School of
Archaeology and Anthropology seeks to appoint a medical anthropologist,
initially on a three-year term.
The proposed MCHM degree will consist of courses in medical
anthropology, qualitative methodology for health research, field
project, directed readings and research report, with dedicated electives
such as Ancient Medicine; Plagues, Pestilence and Famine; Representing
Medicine in Literature and Popular Culture, as well as electives drawn
from across campus in different disciplines. Many students will take the
program in a part-time mode combined with their professional practice.
The appointee will coordinate the program and teach the core
course in medical anthropology at both Masters and undergraduate level.
They will also be responsible for marketing of the program and the
administration of students in the program, and for supervision of
students' field projects and research reports. The appointee will also
teach a course in their field of expertise at undergraduate / Master's
level, possibly in a development- related area. The appointee should be
prepared to assist in the supervision of Higher Degree Research students
and to undertake ongoing research of their own.
The new degree will be offered in blended mode, supporting a
number of flexible modes of delivery so as to reach regional, remote and
international student populations in addition to more traditional
on-campus modes of teaching, An understanding of the particular needs
and priorities of these student populations and of postgraduate Master's
degrees students in general is an important aspect of the position as is
an interest in web-based student interaction
The appointee will have a PhD in medical anthropology or allied
field, with achievement in research and scholarship in medical
anthropology. Teaching and supervision experience is desirable, as well
as experience in administration and flexible IT software. The appointee
should be able to work within a multidisciplinary team, and understand
the needs of postgraduate coursework students located both on and off
campus.
