Sin Wen Lau is presenting her midterm paper, 'Cosmopolitanism, Flexibility &
Belonging: An Overseas Chinese Christian Group in Shanghai', this
Thursday. Do come along and share your insights.
This seminar is about a group of overseas Chinese women who are part of
a Christian network in the city of Shanghai. It draws on some findings
and analysis of my fieldwork in China between 2006 to 2007. These women
are trailing spouses who moved to mainland China with their husbands who
are either employed by multinationals or have invested in the China
market. The seminar discusses ethnicity and religion as dual principles
of organization and perceptions of home within the group. In doing so,
it highlights some critical issues surrounding the group and suggests a
complex understanding of self, essentially of struggling to find
stability in mobile lives.
