Wednesday seminar for September 26:
Diana Young, Research School of Humanities, ANU
Mutable things; the materiality of social relations at the Ernabella Mission
Abstract:
'To realise some of the potential of things, and not others, is the stuff of historical struggles and contingencies’ (Keane 2005). The particular potential that Anangu found inherent in some things that became available to them through the settler culture and that made them highly desirable, was their colour. The idea of ‘colour’ too was an imported one, an historically and culturally specific idea, as I will explore here. These novel goods, clothing among them, allowed not just a preservation of indigenous culture but an elaboration of certain aspects of it. As an example of this I will discuss the craving for red ochre and redness, and the cloth substitutions for it, by Indigenous people living on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands.
