The Research School of Humanities presents,

The 4th Key Thinkers lecture

Tuesday 12th August, 5 - 6.30pm, Conference Room,

Old Canberra House, ANU.

Judith Butler: Toward an Ethic of Non-violence

Dr Fiona Jenkins

Senior lecturer in Philosophy at the School of Humanities, ANU

Judith Butler is Maxine Elliot Professor in the Departments of Rhetoric
and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Berkeley.
Her work, which draws together and extends some of the major
intellectual currents in nineteenth and twentieth century French and
German philosophy, has been hugely influential in queer and gender
studies, feminism, sociology, cultural theory and literary criticism.
This talk considers her contribution as a political philosopher and
ethical thinker, disciplinary areas that have often given a more
dismissive or indifferent reception to her thought. In particular, the
talk explores Butler's critique of violence and her attempt to
articulate an ethic of non-violence that would be salient to some of the
most entrenched conflicts of the contemporary world.

Fiona Jenkins is a senior lecturer in Philosophy at the School of
Humanities, Australian National University. She teaches on French
philosophy, Nietzsche, film, and on aspects of democratic theory. Her
current research has the working title Ungrievable Lives.
