Friday Forum
1-2.30 pm, 15 August, 2008, Theatrette, Old Canberra House
VOICES IN TIME: MUSIC AS EVIDENCE
Jenny Gall, Kirsty Gillespie and Jill Matthews
Facilitator: Kate Bowan
Researching music reveals the way in which individuals or groups of
people use and/or make music at a given point in time. Music provides
evidence of the dimensions of meaning encompassed in an occasion. A
musical event, when its text and context are analysed, can present a
microcosm of culture.
Three scholars from different disciplines demonstrate how they have used
their particular application/interpretation of music to increase their
knowledge of a chosen subject, opening doors for research across the
humanities and social sciences.
Jenny Gall's research interests include the Australian folk tradition
and ballad studies. She plays the fiddle, piano and viola. She will talk
about the ballad, The Female Rambling Sailor, and explain what her
research has revealed about the hidden lives of Australian women
musicians.
Kirsty Gillespie's research focuses on music in Papua New Guinea. She
will speak about a women's song from the Highlands region and how it
embodies mission history, gender relations, and desire and empowerment
in a rapidly changing society.
Jill Matthews' research interests include sensory experience as a
dimension of historical meaning. She will talk about music, modernity
and murder.
