ARE ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENTS SOCIALLY EXCLUSIVE? A STUDY FROM THAILAND

Dr Tim Forsyth (Reader in Development Studies, London School of
Economics and Political Science, UK)

Friday 22 February 2008, 12.30-1.30pm
Seminar Room C (Nadel Room) Coombs Building, ANU

Abstract
Many people have claimed that environmental social movements are
socially inclusive and can challenge repressive state agendas. Yet,
there is little research that actually assess the influence of different
classes. Environmental policy may also repeat old-fashioned statements
about environment that restrict livelihoods for poor people. This
seminar presents a study using historical newspaper reporting in
Thailand between 1968 and 2000 to asess how different social classes
have created environmental beliefs. The findings demonstrate the
continued influence of middle classes on environmental thinking. This
seminar also provides a background and further discussion to the book
recently published by Andrew Walker and Tim Forsyth on the politics of
environment in Thailand.
