*Australia**'s Role in Democracy Promotion*
*
*Dear Colleagues,

The Centre for Democratic Institutions (CDI) and the Australian
Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) are convening a half-day
public forum on "Australia's Role in Democracy Promotion", to be held on
14 March 2008 at the AIIA conference room in Deakin, Canberra.

The forum will bring together key actors - parliamentarians, government
officials, political parties, and independent bodies - engaged in
promoting and enhancing democracy abroad. It will examine Australia's
current approaches and policies to democracy promotion, and look at ways
in which these could be improved, both in our immediate Asia-Pacific
neighbourhood as well as further afield.

The Parliamentary Secretary for International Development Assistance,
the Hon Bob McMullan MP, has agreed to open the event. His presentation
will be followed by a keynote address by CDI Director Ben Reilly
examining Australia's approach to democracy promotion in an
international context. The Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign
Affairs, Senator Marise Payne, will then give an Opposition perspective
on these issues.

Following this, the Australian Labor and Liberal parties will be invited
to discuss their own international activities in this field.
Representatives of relevant government agencies such as the Department
of Foreign Affairs and the Australian Electoral Commission will also
have the opportunity to discuss key activities in this area.

The Forum will be chaired by Mr Tony Eggleton AO CVO.

*All are welcome but space is limited so please RSVP by March 5** **to:
