Moving Pictures: Rickshaw art of Bangladesh¹
Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt:
The question I ask is: how to interpret the unique art on the fragile
rickshaws, an art form that not only sustains millions but also provides a
visual feast in the mundane and busy life of urban Bangladesh.
This presentation makes the rickshaw art, the artists and the artisans
visible, embedded in the rich and distinctive artistic tradition of
Bangladesh. Rickshaw art is not a homogeneous monolith with a distinctive
style, making the rickshaw an interesting vehicle to explore the everyday
life in Bangladesh. The art, and those practising it, are nourished by the
riverine land and waters of the country, with which a strong connections is
maintained. Transplanted in the city, the art remains alive but constantly
mutates as it receives new patrons and new modes of expression.
Moving Pictures (by Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt and David Williams is forthcoming in
March 2008 from Mapin Publishing House Private Limited & Grantha). Kuntala
has spent many years travelling in Bangladesh, and is an artist and a
photographer.
