*Reading tropical geographies of Asia for diverse cultural economic
practices*
This seminar presents a research proposal for comments and suggestions.
The research project [to be undertaken by Katherine Gibson, Lesley
Potter and Gerda Roelvink]* *will reconstruct landscapes of cultural
economic diversity in rural Asia from a close reading of 'tropical
geographies' written in the mid-twentieth century. These texts,
published before geography shifted to systematic studies of
modernization and underdevelopment, contain material ripe for discursive
gleaning. They provide information on culturally embedded practices of
exchange, labour, enterprise and environmental management that can
contribute to current debates about ethical economies and alternative
development pathways. A book on the role that tropical geographers
played in the shaping of modern economies in Asia will be written.
