Graeme Gill 'Regime Change and the Significance of Bodies'
A variety of symbolic issues are raised when there is a change in
political regime. One such issue that became prominent with the fall of
communism was what to do about bodies associated with the former regime.
Two types of issue arose in this regard. One concerned the body of regime
founders, like Lenin whose corpse lay in a mausoleum in Red Square on
public display. The second concerned the bodies of those who had been
repressed under the former regime. This paper will explore how these
issues have been handled and the implications this has had for future
development.
