Indochinese Cultural Contact Zones

This paper examines a number of spaces in Sydney, Vietnam, Laos and
Cambodia
where Indochinese people come into regular contact with each other.
Intercultural knowledges and interactions in these sites are very much
informed by the pre and postcolonial histories of these nations'
relations.
In particular, Vietnam's position as regional hegemon strongly colours
Lao
and Cambodian perceptions of Vietnamese subjects and culture. However,
the
dominant discourses members of these communities/nations produce about
each
other are contradicted by the realities of interculturalism in contact
zones
such as Cabramatta in Sydney and the cities and border regions of
Indochina.
The paper examines this tension between discourses and practices around
Indochinese others. It pays special attention to the way these
discourses
and practices connect to very recent border dynamics in the Indochinese
homelands.
