SMALL-SCALE FISHING BY THE SAMA ON EAST COAST SABAH, BORNEO: COMPARISON
OF LAND AND SEA SAMA FISHERMEN

Dr Rinato Ono (Postdoc Fellow, Anthropology and Natural History, ANU)

Tuesday 3 June 2008, 12.30-1.30pm
Seminar Room B (Arndt Room) Coombs Building, ANU

Abstract
The Sama people are known as maritime people and sea nomads. Since the
1950s their life styles and social status have changed with the emerging
nations of Malaysia, Philppines and Indonesia, though traditional
aspects have been retained. In this seminar I will present my recent
research on small-scale fishing by the Sama (Bajau) people in Semporna
on the east coast of Borneo in Malaysia. To contextualise this research
I will discuss my work as archaeologist in reconstructing the
prehistoric fishing practices of South East Asian and Pacific Islanders.
In particular, the presentation will focus on two Sama groups: (1) Land
Sama, who hold Malaysian citizenship, and engage in various subsistence
and economic activities including fishing, and (2) Sea Sama, comprising
largely of immigrants and refugees from Philippines since 1960s, who are
mainly engage in fishing. By introducing their fishing styles,
strategies, economic situations, food consumptions, and social
interactions, I would like to discuss why the Sea Sama fishermen, who
are mainly new comers and don't hold Malaysian citizenship, can practice
fishing in the region.
