Hong Kong and Macau's History Museums: Towards Understanding the Museums
of the Asia-Pacific Region

Dr Peter Stanley,

Director, Centre for Historical Research, National Museum of Australia

The National Museum of Australia is taking a stronger interest in
understanding the museums of the Asia-Pacific region, both as an
outgrowth of its journal, reCollections, and as a part of its
relationship with the museums of our region. But how shall we approach
and investigate these museums? Do they manifest particular
characteristics? What must we understand in order to appreciate what
they do and how? What questions should we ask? How can understanding
them help us to understand our own museums?

Peter Stanley recently travelled to Hong Kong and Macau, where he
visited their history museums. He will reflect on what he saw and
suggest ways of approaching these museums, hoping to stimulate
discussion about the broader question of our engagement with the museums
of the region.

Dr Peter Stanley is Director of the Centre for Historical Research at
the National Museum of Australia. He is presently a Visiting Fellow in
the Research School of Humanities. An historian and the author of 20
books in Australian and British military, medical and social history, he
has worked in museums since 1980 and is interested in the ways museums
interpret history.

This seminar is held jointly with the Public Culture seminar series.
