This seminar on Arnhem Land material culture may be of interest.
Once Upon a Time... there were some biting bags...
Please join us on Thursday 13 November at 10.00am in the theatrette at OCH
for Louise Hamby's talk, abstract below:
Objects are powerful in that they can tell you stories from the past if you
understand where to look for the information. Museum collections from Arnhem
Land hold many objects linked to people either in their making or their
collection. Ones made from fibre command this researchers attention more so
than other works. For this paper a particular type of fibre object from a
specific place will be the focus of the discussion. Biting bags from
Milingimbi are the star characters in the story. I have selected Milingimbi
as a site for a variety of reasons related to current and past research of
Aboriginal material culture and to relationships formed with Yolngu from
Milingimbi. The biting bag is of course only one of a number of objects that
can tell a story but is closely related to baskets which have been at the
core of my work for a quarter of a century.
