Marking Anniversaries -1968
Presenters: Robert Aldrich, Douglas Craig and Margaret Poulos
Facilitator: Carolyn Strange
In August 2008 U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, invoked an
earlier era in international relations when she warned Russia: "This is
not 1968."
Popularised as "the year that rocked the world" 1968 marks a time when
divisions erupted within and between nations. Yet it was also a moment
in which enduring cultural and political connections were formed.
Three historians examine key events in 1968 and reflect on the year's
memory forty years on.
Robert Aldrich, Dept. of History, University of Sydney, will focus on
France.
Douglas Craig, Dept. of History, ANU, will focus on the U.S.A.
Margaret Poulos, Dept. of History, University of Sydney, will focus on
Greece.
Convenors
Carolyn Strange & Mary Hutchison
