The Research School of Humanities presents,
Friday Forum
1-2.30 pm, 10th October, 2008, Theatrette, Old Canberra House
Sounding the Past and the Future
Presenters: Kevin Bradley, Larry Sitsky and Neville Fletcher
In this forum three renowned experts discuss the history of sound
reproduction and preservation and explore its future prospects.
Kevin Bradley - The history of the development of audio technology is
littered with claims of perfection and accuracy, which are later
discredited or trumped, yet each stage of technical development has
altered how audio recordings are produced and used. Kevin Bradley will
take a socio-technical view of the technology and consider how the use
or recording technology has altered our social and historical
interaction with the aural.
Larry Sitsky - The player piano roll, a sound recording invention of the
nineteenth century, is the focus of Larry Sitsky's presentation. By
playing several examples and displaying an historic roll he will explore
how past piano-playing practices are imbedded in this technology.
Neville Fletcher - Acoustic technology has advanced to the stage where
nearly anything is possible, from realistic reproductions of orchestral
performances, through the exaggerated presentations of rock musicians,
to the synthesis of "music" from wire fences or the oscillations of
stars. Where to from here?
Kevin Bradley is Curator of Oral History and Folklore and Director of
Sound Preservation at the National Library of Australia. He is a member
of the UNESCO Memory of the World Sub Committee on Technology.
Professor Larry Sitsky is Australia's premier performer, composer and
music researcher. His work in numerous genres (including opera, theatre,
orchestral, chamber, solo and vocal music) has been recognized in
numerous awards, including the Order of Australia.
Neville Fletcher is Emeritus Professor, Research School of Physical
Sciences and Engineering, ANU. He is also a musician and the author of
Brief Candles.
