Sherry Ortner, Distinguished Professor of Anthropology, University of
California, Los Angeles
Indie Producers: Class and the Production of Value in Recent American
Independent Cinema¹
Sherry B. Ortner has done extensive fieldwork with the Sherpas of Nepal, on
religion, politics and the Sherpas¹ involvement in mountaineering. Her final
book on the Sherpas, Life and Death on Mt. Everest, was awarded the JI
Stanley Prize for the best anthropology book of 2004. She also publishes
regularly in the areas of cultural theory and feminist theory. She is
currently working on the relationship between independent films, Hollywood
movies and American culture.
