The Research School of Humanities presents,

 Friday Forum

1-2.30 pm, 24th October, 2008, Theatrette, Old Canberra House

Mapping Time

Presenters: Li Narangoa, CAP, Robert Cribb, CAP and Paul D'Arcy, CAP

Facilitator: Carolyn Strange.

Mapping time is a concept far older than David Christian's Maps of Time,
and its meanings and methods are multiple.

Three scholars examine different cultures and media of time-mapping in
this Forum.

Li Narangoa and Robert Cribb are collaborators on a project concerning
historical maps and the reconstruction of geographical consciousness.
They will discuss their creation of an historical atlas of Northeast
Asia, from 1600 to the present. Part of their project involves finding
imaginative ways to depict historical information in map form; another
involves transferring information from early maps to their new ones.

Paul D'Arcy will explore the distinctiveness of the Oceanic world and
how its inhabitants perceive space. Pacific Islander mental maps
perceive Oceanic space, particularly maritime space, and time as fluid
and inter-related. Islander notions of space have long been recognized
as distinct from Western ones, but the tighter linking of both to the
conception of time is an important refinement that leads us closer to
core issues of cultural identity.
