PhD scholarship or Postdoctoral Fellowship, Linguistics or Anthropology,
ANU
(from Ian Keen)

Expressions of interest are being sought from potential doctoral and
post-doctoral candidates interested in enrolling in a PhD, or carrying
out Postdoctoral Research at the Australian National University. An ARC
scholarship is available for a successful doctoral candidate for 3 years
or a salary at Lecturer level for one year for a Postdoctoral Fellow.

The research topic is related to an ARC Discovery Project tracing change
in family and social organisation in Indigenous Australia, using
evidence from language, whose chief investigators are Harold Koch and
Ian Keen, with senior researcher Patrick McConvell. The successful
candidate will be expected to carry out fieldwork in an Australian
Indigenous community on use of kinship terminology, with probable
emphasis on change and how more than one language and kinship system
intersect. They will describe the semantics and pragmatics of linguistic
terminology used for discussing family and social relations in the
traditional languages, and possibly in the local variety of English, as
well as the social practices determined by kinship relations. The
project description can be negotiated with regard to the background and
interests of the student or Fellow.

Applicants should have a background in either:
Linguistics and a familiarity with Australian languages, or
Anthropology, with knowledge of Australian kinship systems.
