Anthropology Friday Seminar Series. Semester 1, 2009. Milgate Room, AD
Hope. Friday, 27th February, 3pm.

Dr Patrick Guinness: 'The demise of the slametan ritual cycle in urban
Java. Did Clifford Geertz get it right?'

Clifford Geertz in the 1950s identified the slametan ritual feast as the
centre of the whole Javanese religious system, yet he predicted its
imminent demise in urban neighbourhoods. Fifty years later in Yogyakarta
the slametan is rarely celebrated. Did Geertz get it right? Does
anonymity, individualism and secularism characterize contemporary urban
Java?

All welcome!
