The next meeting of the Melanesia Symposium will be on Monday, 20 July
at 3:00 in Coombs Seminar Room E. The book to be discussed is:

The discussion will be led by Prof. Robert Foster, a leading
Melanesianist from the University of Rochester who is currently visiting
the RSPAS Gender Relations Centre on the Vice Chancellor’s scheme for
Distinguished International Visitors.

The assigned readings for the discussion are pages 1–7, 74–115, 133–34,
144–50 and 154–57. Copies of those pages are available in the
Anthropology Library (Coombs 7209), and on the web. To download the
readings, go to the RSPAS Anthropology site at
http://rspas.anu.edu.au/anthropology/seminars.php and click on
‘Seminars’ For this one you must use the username 'melanesia' and the
password 'symp0sium' Note that the these words are case sensitive and
that the fifth character 'symp0sium' is a zero (0), not an 'O'. (Best to

You are encouraged to read whole book, which is available on 2-day loan
from Hancock Library. Everyone is welcome to participate in this
