New portrait commissions are an important aspect of the National
Portrait Gallery's collection development program. NPG curators Dr Sarah
Engledow and Dr Christopher Chapman, and artist Jude Rae, discuss the
logic behind the collection display at the new gallery, and the
conceptual and practical imperatives of portrait commissions.
Sarah Engledow is a curator and historian at the NPG. She has undertaken
in-depth research on many of Gallery's portraits. Sarah will speak about
the Gallery's history and collection development, and the presentation
of biographical information in the Gallery context.
Christopher Chapman is a curator at the NPG. He will discuss the
commissioning process and the research agendas that guide the collection
display.
Jude Rae is an artist who lives in Canberra. Her portrait of eminent
virologist Frank Fenner was commissioned by the NPG in 2007. Jude is
currently a PhD candidate at the ANU School of Art. She will speak about
the commission process from her experience as an artist.
