A NEW EDITION OF THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL DICTIONARY
Dr Bruce Moore
Head, the Australian National Dictionary Centre
The first edition of the Australian National Dictionary was published in
1988. It is a dictionary of Australianisms based on historical
principles, containing some 10,000 Australian words, meanings, and
idioms. For the second edition, we will be adding some 4000 new entries.
This paper will focus on some of the categories of words-e.g. an
increase in colloquial words and colloquial idioms, names of indigenous
languages and peoples, words that belong to international English but
are used in distinctive or more intensive ways in Australia, and so
on-that have been chosen for the new edition, and the methodologies that
led to the decision to include or exclude words. The paper will also
address the extraordinary developments in technology and the
availability of information on the Internet that have been both a joy
and a nightmare to the historical lexicographer.
Bruce Moore holds a BA and MA from the University of Melbourne, and a
PhD from the University of New South Wales. He taught at the University
of Sydney, Monash University, and the University of New South Wales
(Faculty of Military Studies RMC Duntroon, and the Australian Defence
Force Academy) before taking up the position of Reader and Head of the
Australian National Dictionary Centre, Australian National University,
in 1994. His research interests include Australian English, Old English,
Middle English, and Renaissance literature.
