>From 'Great Depression' to 'Global Financial Crisis'?
Historical Reflections
Prof. Tim Hatton, Economics Program, RSSS
Dr. Rick Kuhn, Reader, Political Science, School of Social Sciences
Facilitator: Dr Carolyn Strange, RSH
Recent downturns in the global economy have brought events of the 1930s
to the forefront of public consciousness. In this Forum a political
scientist and an economic historian discuss the economic and political
insights that may arise by comparing these two historical moments.
Tim Hatton will compare the economic forces that initiated the Great
Depression with those operating in the current global financial crisis.
He will contrast the policy responses then and now, and consider the
longer term implications for the management of the macroeconomy.
Rick Kuhn will argue that The Great Depression and today's "Great
Recession" (the IMF's euphemism) are both consequences of capitalism's
tendency to break down. The current crisis will only be overcome at the
expense of the jobs, wages, conditions and lives of millions of people
or by overturning the capitalist logic of production for profit which
generated it.
