Afternoon kinship workshop
Wednesday 27 May, from 1:30 (to finish by 4pm at the latest)
Coombs Seminar Room D.
The AustKin project (Tracing change in family and social organization in
Indigenous Australia, using evidence from language) invites you to a
workshop on the afternoon of Wednesday 27 May.
Ian Keen, from the School of Archeology and Anthropology, will present
some
comparisons of kinship terminologies of southeast Australia from the
Austkin
database, and raise the issue of how best to analyse and present
similarities and differences - whether in terms of 'types' such as
'Kariera', 'Aranda' and 'Karadjeri', or Schefflerian equivalence rules,
or
some other procedure, or some combination of these. One possible focus
might
be on 'differentiation': in a model of a posited historical transition
from
a Kariera-type terminology to the Yolngu one I suggest successive
'differentiations' e.g. between FZ and WM (MMBD), or FZDDC (dhumun.gur)
and
wSC/ZSC (gaminyarr).
We have set aside time from 1:30-4pm for this workshop. It is
anticipated
that Ian's presentation of his recent work will lead into an in-depth
discussion of the issues mentioned above. Some of the discussion will
be
focussed on how these matters relate to the Austkin project, but will
hopefully also be of interest to others with an interest in kinship
systems.
Best regards,
Rachel Hendery
