** Leap into Frogwatch
Frogwatch is an annual count of frogs in key habitats around Australia. Frogs are an indicator of the health of an ecosystem, so frog-spotting not only gets you outside into some of Canberra's wetland environments but helps measure the health of our waterways. You can even contribute to biodiversity management at ANU by choosing one of the campus' ponds or a part of Sullivan's Creek as a monitoring site.
To take part
1. Contact the ACT frogwatch coordinator to register your interest:

** New year-round Frogspotters program
Frogspotters is suited to the more enthusiastic Frogwatcher. Designed by expert frog ecologists, Frogspotters is an innovative monitoring program that will challenge frog enthusiasts to monitor key Frogwatch sites throughout the year. Information collected will provide detailed knowledge and understanding of frog ecology leading to action to protect and conserve these significant species.

** "A" is for Apple, Spring is for Cycling
The days are getting longer and the mornings warmer - now is the time to pump up the tyres on your old bike, take it to the bike shop for a service, and start enjoying Canberra's blossoming gardens every day on your way to and from the ANU.
Cycling or walking will help keep you away from the doctor and the dreaded petrol pump.
Many staff and students already ride to ANU from all over Canberra.
Tim Raupach, Masters student and staff member at NICTA, started cycling from his home in Woden earlier this year.
"I used to drive, but when it came time to think about buying a new car friends convinced me to buy a bike instead. Plus it's good for fitness and for the environment.
"I'm sure I can think better after cycling to Uni - the morning ride in really wakes me up. It's also way faster to get places on a bike compared to walking (or sometimes even bussing), ie the trip from ANU to Civic is fantastically quick.
"Because I wasn't buying a car, I bought a new bike which really makes the commuting easier. I try to ride every day but in reality I probably ride 4 times a week."
When he doesn't ride, Tim catches lifts with friends, borrows a car or takes the bus.
"I am very pleased with the change in season - riding without having to worry about getting cold (ie gloves etc) is really nice. If it's raining and I'm at home I tend to try to organise a lift or catch a bus, but if I'm at uni I'll ride home in it. Besides it hardly ever rains in Canberra anyway!"
** National Ride to Work day - breakfast for ANU cyclists
Wednesday 5th October is National Ride to Work Day. Come and help celebrate the new cycling you at the ANU ride-to-work breakfast on Fellows Oval. This is a chance to come and meet other cyclists at the University, talk about the change of season, and to win some cycling prizes provided by Pedal Power.
Location: Fellows Oval, near Sullivans Creek footbridge between Chifley and Hancock libraries
Date: Wednesday 5th October
Time: 7:30-9:30
What: Food (pastries, fruit, juice), lucky draw prizes
** Switch off lights and monitors for a slimmer you
Another exercise tip from the ANUgreen office: shed those excess unwanted kilos on your upper index finger by switching off the lights and your computer monitor before you leave the office. Take 2 minutes now to see why switching off can make a real difference:

** Reuse paper for a slimmer planet
One kind of weight training you shouldn't want to do is carrying around the annual ANU paper consumption: over 80,000 reams, weighing around 200 tonnes. To help cut down on the fat, try reusing scrap paper for notes and drafts.
