<p>What an exciting month it’s been for sustainability on campus! ANU has divested from Santos and Oil Search, provoking huge media coverage and responses from several Cabinet ministers, including the Prime Minister, and the Great Green Debate was a huge success!
Thank you so much to everyone who participated in the debate, as well as those who assisted, volunteered and attended for making the event so successful!

<p>In an email sent to staff and students, the ANU Council has announced it will divest from seven socially irresponsible companies, including two fossil fuel companies – Santos and Oil Search.
</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The stocks to be divested represent around 5.1 per cent of the University’s Australian equity holdings and approximately 1 per cent of its total investment holdings.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Fossil Free ANU commented on the move, stating, "Divesting from coal seam gas fracker Santos vindicates what we have been saying all along: the damage from these companies to our land, water and climate makes them irresponsible investments."
</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Fossil Free ANU has also pointed out, the ANU still invests in other fossil fuel companies, such as BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Woodside Petroleum and Wesfarmers. Fossil Free ANU will continue to push ANU for divestment from all fossil fuel companies.

<p>This is a commendable first step by the University, congratulations to Fossil Free ANU and to the ANU Council!

<p>The climate system is very complex and shows huge variability Understanding its past behaviour and predicting its future is a huge challenge to science. The current status of climate change science and the risks due to the impact of carbon dioxide and other
greenhouse gases emitted through our activities will be discussed. </p>

<p>Looking beyond the here and now and responding to these risks is a challenge to our species. However the challenge to our social, economic and political ways of working and also to technological development could prove extremely valuable.</p>

<p>Professor Sir Brian Hoskins, CBE, FRS is recognised as one of the world’s leading atmospheric scientists. Sir Brian became the first Director of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College London in January 2008, and now shares his time
between Imperial and Reading University, where he is Professor of Meteorology. His research is in weather and climate, in particular the understanding of atmospheric motion from frontal to planetary scales.

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;" lang="EN-US">What</span>: Did you know for example that ants started harvesting resources to use as compost for the cultivation of fungal gardens more than 50 million years ago? And that Australia has over 1500 species
of ant? That Canberra houses more ant species than the British Isles? Ants occupy almost every corner of the planet with the exception of Antarctica and a few islands. ANU ant biologist Chloe Raderschall has been studying navigation in nocturnal bull ants,
seeking to understand how they use visual landmarks and the sky to navigate between food sources and their nest, what sensory adaptations they need to see in dim light and how their brain processes this information. She will take you on a wonderful journey
up in local bushlands to explore the life of ants. </p>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">What:</span> Wind and photovoltaics (PV) constitute most new generation capacity in Australia in the recent past and for the foreseeable future. In July, South Australia obtained nearly half of its electricity from
wind and PV. Around the world wind, PV and hydro constitutes half of new generation capacity in roughly equal measure. The reasons for this development are primarily price competitiveness and concern for global warming. <br>

The prospects and problems of the renewable energy industry will be discussed in this talk. <br>

one of the prominent sites of contestation. Ramifications for global warming, impacts on groundwater, the Great Barrier Reef, and human health are some of the key issues of concern.

<p>With the increasing clamour for national development and food production there is a revival in public discussion of the great ‘untapped’ agricultural potential of northern Australia. Yet despite governments investing millions of dollars supporting cropping
development the huge region has countered the international trend of agricultural intensification. Over the last one hundred and fifty years failed attempts have accumulated with ambitious Texan entrepreneurs losing millions of dollars and Indigenous Australians
being further marginalised. This ongoing cycle of high expectations, failure to realise expectations, then back to high expectations, creates a ‘Circular Conundrum’. Through diverse cropping narratives across time and place this thesis explores what contributes
to the ‘conundrum’ and its persistence, and about Australia’s relationship with its north and how we learn from experience and from place.</p>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;" lang="EN-US">What:</span> The world’s tallest flowering plants – the Mountain Ash forests – lie just 90 minutes’ drive north-east from the Melbourne Cricket Ground. They are the world’s most carbon dense ecosystems.
They yield almost all of Melbourne’s water supply and are a critical environment for a wide range of native plants and animals. Mountain Ash forests are also subject to widespread logging, primarily for paper production and were the scene of the 2009 Black
Saturday wildfires – the worst natural disaster in Australian history. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>Remarkably, very few Australians know about these forests – or of the enormous economic benefits that could accrue from strategic tourism investment and infrastructure. The final part of this Lecture outlines an exciting new vision for the regions lie north-east
of Melbourne – a vision that ultimately may be critical to the very long-term persistence of this majestic forest itself – with resultant benefits for all Australians.”

throughout Australia. She interogated 14 years of population monitoring data from the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) to reveal important biological responses that could not be detected in short-term data. </p>

<p>Never before have such major environmental issues as water, energy, drought, climate change, urbanisation, fires and biodiversity loss, been so prominent in Australia and internationally as they are now. Addressing these issues demands an approach that cuts
across the traditional disciplinary divides between the humanities, the social sciences and the natural sciences. ANU does just that, hosting research and presenting education programs drawing on geography, history, political science, ecology, forestry, hydrology,
mathematics and more.<br>

Whether you are interested in alternative energy sources, sustainable resource management, climate policy or simply curious about the great environment and sustainability issues of our times, ANU has a graduate program for you.<br>
