[anzac.conference] Türk-ANZAC Conference, April 2006, CANCELLED

Dear Colleagues,

We very much regret to advise you that it has been necessary to cancel the Türk-ANZAC Research Libraries Conference which was planned to be held at Çanakkale, Turkey, next April.  

 

It is extremely disappointing to have to cancel this innovative conference which was planned to explore the shared history of Turkey, New Zealand and Australia and deepen professional relationships among colleagues from those nations.  Unfortunately, the timing of the conference, in conjunction with the Dawn Service at ANZAC Cove, imposed logistical challenges because of the extremely high demand for transport from Istanbul to the Gallipoli Peninsula and for accommodation at Çanakkale during that week.  This meant that a minimum number of non-refundable deposits had to be secured in order to reserve transport and accommodation.  Despite negotiating an extension of the deadline, we have been unable to confirm the minimum number required and must therefore cancel before committing the deposits of those who have registered.  No credit cards have been charged and all cheques forwarded with registrations will be returned.

 

Our disappointment is accentuated because so many colleagues have felt inspired by the idea of this conference and many from the three countries have worked to make it happen.  Excellent proposals for papers have been submitted promising a very stimulating conference.  It is a great pity that they cannot be aired and debated.  They would have contributed to our understanding of the events of 1915 and our national memorialising of those events, as well as the professional issues raised by their curation.

 

Our thanks go to all who submitted proposals and all who worked to make this happen.
