Dear Turk-ANZAC Research Libraries Conference organising group,

I thought I'd give you the first update on where we are so far.
First of all, thanks very much to all of you for being part of this exciting
project. This is a world first. A Librarians' Conference at Gallipoli with a
dawn service.

Progress so far includes:
We have a group of people from a wide cross-section of the community who
have an interest in this conference and who are willing to be involved in
the planning and organisation from Turkey, Australia and New Zealand.

In Turkey, we have a team of librarians who will be looking after the local
organisation. They will be visiting Canakkale in the first week of April to
talk to the 18th March University staff and start planning accommodation,
venue etc. The Turkish team leader Hilmi Celik who is the Director of
Sabanci University's Information Centre. Hilmi's team includes Didar Bayir
and Gunes Kara from Koc University, Bulent Karasozen from Middle East
Technical University and Gurol Baba from 18th March University.
BTW: 18th March is the day of commemoration for Gallipoli victims in Turkey.

In Australia, our team includes Alex Byrne (sponsor), Grace Saw and Gulcin
Cribb as the Co-Chairs and Margy Burn (NLA), Mal Booth (AWML), Greg
Andersen or Gianni Di Gravio (Newcastle) and one person from New Zealand as
well as Gunes Kara and Gurol Baba as members of the program committee.
Grace has designed a postcard to ask for expressions of interest for papers.
It has timelines, details of the website and email address. The postcard is
attached. Grace is looking into getting it printed.
We hope to distribute it at CAUL in April in Auckland. We can then reach
both CAUL and CONZUL members. It will be great to do a media release prior
to the ANZAC Day this year about the conference.
Grace has kindly organised the website as well. It is at:
www.library.uq.edu/turk-anzac-conf2006
The website will be populated soon.

Next stages
Well, it will be great to hear your ideas and suggestions regarding what has
been happening so far.
Hilmi will be sending us a draft budget soon.
We thought it will be good to get a prominent historian from Australia to do
a keynote. Maybe the New Zealanders would like to send someone as well.
Does anyone have any ideas about who that person should be. So, we can
approach him/her.
We will need some funding. Mal suggested we approach the Veterans' Affairs.
I haven't done so yet. Any other ideas, suggestions?
Best wishes to all
Gulcin
