Hi Folks,
Here are the details of a potential PhD project which is available at
Melb Uni. Please pass on to any students who may be interested.
many thanks, Jon
Applications are invited for the following postgraduate research
project, tenable at the School of Earth Sciences, University of
Melbourne.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF PALAEOCLIMATE PROXIES: NEW INSIGHTS FROM OLD CAVES
The last twenty million years of Earth history have witnessed
enormous climatic and environmental changes, impacting crucially on
the evolution of the landscape and dispersal of animal species across
the globe. Speleothems (stalagmites, flow stones and other cave
deposits) preserve a detailed record of these past climatic regimes
and recent analytical developments at the University of Melbourne
have allowed the use of a much wider range of samples in this regard,
spanning many millions of years (Woodhead et al, Quaternary
Geochronology, in press). This project will investigate novel trace
element variations (e.g. iodine, mercury) in a variety of speleothems
with a view to establishing new proxies able to directly address the
onset of Quaternary climatic regimes in Australia.
Supervisors : Drs Jon Woodhead and. John Hellstrom
The general application process for the Melbourne University PhD
program is described here:
