PhD Research Project Funding 

Australian Tsunami Research Centre and Natural Hazards Research Laboratory

School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Science

Expressions of interest are sought from suitably qualified graduates for up to FOUR funded PhD Research projects in the new Australian Tsunami Research Centre and Natural Hazards Research Laboratory, School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. 

 

The field research scholarships are worth up to $10,000 and may be used for any element of field research and/or conference attendance and skills development. The exact level of funding available will be negotiated with successful applicants and will depend on the nature of the agreed project. The University of New South Wales also offers a range of additional top-up scholarships for various travel, conference and fieldwork costs that enrolled PhD candidates may apply for.

 

Please note that the scholarships are only available to permanent residents or citizens of Australia and New Zealand. The award of these field research scholarships are for candidates who are successful in applying for APA scholarships for their proposed PhD topic. The successful applicants will be primarily supervised by Professor James Goff and Associate Professor Dale Dominey-Howes but may/will also work with other members of staff with appropriate complimentary skills across UNSW.

 

These field research scholarships are for candidates enrolling first session 2010.

 

Possible PhD topics include (but are not limited to):

 

  a.. Indigenous knowledge systems in relation to environment; indigenous knowledge and coping in relation to natural hazards
 

  a.. Tsunami and storm surge modeling
 

  a.. Geological and/or archaeological evidence for palaeotsunami in the South Pacific
 

  a.. Geological and/or archaeological evidence for palaeotsunami in Australia (not in New South Wales)
 

  a.. Coupled human-environment systems and natural hazards
 

  a.. Social dimensions of hazard and risk
 

  a.. Social and cultural constructs of hazard and risk
 

  a.. Engineering vulnerability assessment
 

  a.. Climate and climate change hazards and extremes in Australia
 

  a.. Economic impacts of natural disasters
 

·        Analysis of the Black Saturday Victorian bushfires

 

·        Geological records of tsunamis in Tasmania

 

·        A review of human deaths and natural hazards in Australia

 

·        Climate change risks and business planning in Sydney

 

·        Investigating the geological evidence for the Eltanin asteroid tsunami in Australia and New Zealand

 

 

Proposals for alternative PhD topics broadly in the field of natural hazards and disaster studies are welcomed.

 

Applications are sought from suitably qualified candidates with either a first class Honours degree and/or Masters by Research in a discipline relevant to the final PhD project approved for study.

How do I apply?

 

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) has a centralized application and enrollment system for PhD students. You CAN NOT send documents or apply directly to us. All questions about the application process MUST be directed at the central application office. To apply, you must go through UNSW's Graduate Research School (GRS). However, discussion about potential PhD topics should be directed to James and Dale in the first instance.
