A 3 year PhD scholarship associated with ARC Linkage Project LP110100180 ‘Enhancing cultural heritage management for mining operations: a multi-disciplinary approach', is available in the Department of Environment and Geography at Macquarie University.

Please quote the allocation reference number LP110100180 on your application form.

Project Name: Enhancing Cultural Heritage Management for mining operations: a multi-disciplinary approach.

Project Description:

Applications are sought from suitably qualified students (good Honours 1 or Research Masters) with a background in geomorphology or other terrestrial geoscience to join our multi-disciplinary international team of researchers working on improving Cultural Heritage Management outcomes from mining operations. The project is based at Weipa in Far North Queensland, Australia, where our industry partner, RioTintoAlcan Pty Ltd, extracts bauxite. The successful applicant will work with the Project Leader, A/Prof Trish Fanning from Macquarie University, and Chief Investigator, Dr Craig Sloss from Queensland University of Technology, to investigate landscape change along the coastal estuarine margins of the Mission, Pine, Hey and Embley Rivers. Developing a chronology of landscape change, using Optically Stimulated Luminescence, Amino Acid Racemisation and other dating techniques, is a key component of the research. These outputs will be integrated with archaeological and palaeoenvironmental data to understand past human-environment interactions, and contribute to Cultural Heritage Management.

Collaborating institutions include the Australian National University, the Queensland University of Technology, the University of Auckland, the Waikato University Radiocarbon Laboratory, and the University of York, UK, and the successful applicant will have opportunities to work with leading researchers from those institutions.

Prospective applicants should, in the first instance, submit a CV, including current email address and phone number, to the principal supervisor: Associate Professor Trish Fanning, email: patricia.fanning at mq.edu.au<mailto:patricia.fanning at mq.edu.au>, telephone: +61 (0)2 9850 7979<tel:%2B61%20%280%292%209850%207979>, with a statement of interest and background relevant to the proposed project.

The 2011 APAI full-time stipend rate is $27,651 pa, tax free. The stipend is indexed to increase each year and is initially available for 3 years. Generous project support funding is also provided by Macquarie University.

Applicants will need to complete a candidature/scholarship application form and arrange for two academic referee reports to be submitted to the Higher Degree Research Office. Refer to: http://www.hdr.mq.edu.au/information_about/applications for further application instructions. Macquarie University will advise the successful applicant of entitlements at the time of scholarship offer.
