Important note: the conference will begin formally on November 10th at 8:30 am. We suggest attendees arrive on November 9th, to allow for travel time between the airport or bus station in Mendoza and the conference location in Uco Valley. The registration fees include hotel accommodations between November 9th and 15th (see below).

1. Scientific Focus
The Southern Deserts Conference is an interdisciplinary meeting that promotes a comparative perspective on the Quaternary evolution of desert landscapes and peoples from the southern Hemisphere (Oceania, Africa and South America). This endeavor is necessarily based on a fluid dialogue between Paleoecology, Geology, and Archaeology. The 4th Southern Deserts Conference (4SDC) will be held in Uco Valley 1 , a mountainous region with world-renowned wineproduction located in the province of Mendoza in the Argentine Andes. It builds on successful conferences in Canberra (Australia, 2003), Arica (Chile, 2005) and Kalahari (South Africa, 2008).

2. Modes of presentation
>From its beginnings in 2003, the Southern Deserts Conference is aimed at providing a workshop environment that is congenial to intensive, informal exchanges on interdisciplinary issues. Two formats of presentations are accepted: Oral Presentations and Posters. In order to allow sufficient time for discussion, participants can only present one oral presentation and one poster as leading author. Posters are encouraged and will be given a prominent role in the discussions of each session. We will award two book prices for the best posters lead by students and graduate students, kindly donated by their authors: Mike Smith's "The Archaeology of Australia's Deserts" (Cambridge University Press), and David Thomas's "Arid Zone Geomorphology. Process, Form and Change in Drylands" (Wiley-Blackwell).

3. Sessions and Conferences
Each session accepts Oral and Poster presentations. Coordinators will integrate both in general discussions.

4. Location and services
The Conference will be held in the Fuente Mayor Hotel, located in the Uco Valley,
Tunuyán, Mendoza Province, Argentina (GPS location: -33.632558, -69.14458). This hotel is located next to the Andes Mountains. Its Mediterranean climate provides the ideal environment for the finest wine production. On Wednesday 12, activities will be hosted at the Salentein Winery, which will include a tour and tasting of its remarkable wines. Dinner at Salentein will include a famous Argentinean Asado (barbecue).

5. Registration Fees and Abstract Submission
Registration Fees include:
- Transfer to and from the hotel. Transfers will depart from Mendoza Airport and downtown Mendoza on Sunday 9th (details will be given in the next circular)
- Hotel accommodation. Check in is November 9th (Sunday). Check out is November 15th (Saturday). Double rooms will be standard, and shared rooms can be set up in the online registration by using the option 'accommodation preferences'. Rooms for up to 4 can be accommodated upon request.
- Meals. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the hotel.
- Salentein Winery. Transfer, meals, and wine tasting.

Reduced Fee until June 30th: 8000 $ Argentinean Pesos (equivalent to ca. 940 USD).
Regular Fee between July 1st through September 1st: 9000 $ Argentinean Pesos (equivalent to ca. 1060 USD).
Dates: registration will be open between the following dates: May 1st through July 30th of2014.

Post-conference excursion to northern Patagonia
Reduced Fee until June 30th: 9000 $ Argentinean Pesos (equivalent to ca. 1060 USD).
Regular Fee between July 1st through September 1st: 9.500 $ Argentinean Pesos (equivalent to ca. 1120 USD).
Includes transport, accommodation and all meals.
The excursion will be from November 15th to 20th. It leaves from the Hotel Fuente Mayor and ends in Mendoza City. It is not included in the registration fee. The trip includes visits to a range of Patagonian desert and semi-desert environments, which provide glimpses of the South American Arid Diagonal (see figure below). A Google Earth kmz file with the main stops is available.
The trip will be guided by specialists on regional volcanology, desert geomorphology, and paleoecology.
