​AQUA 2016: Quaternary perspectives from the City of Volcanoes



Old Government House 5-9 December 2016, Auckland, New Zealand

Co-sponsored by NIWA, GNS Science, University of Waikato and the University of Auckland



·       Four exciting days of Quaternary science sessions

·       Mid-conference field trip to Auckland Volcanic Field sites and Waitakere Ranges kauri forest

·       Conference dinner and winery tour at Villa Maria Estate inside the Ihumatao volcanic crater



Registration fee will be ALL INCLUSIVE and is expected to be $400 NZD (full) and $250NZD (student)



Session themes include:

·       Evolution and impacts of ENSO

·       Southern Hemisphere Assessment of PalaeoEnvironments (INQUA PALCOM IFG)

·       Millennial-scale variability and environmental change : MIS5-Present

·       Australasian peats and their potential

·       Late Quaternary human impacts and activities in Australasia and Oceania

·       Extending tephras (EXTRAS) & employing them in Quaternary reconstructions (INQUA INTAV IFG)

·       Quaternary coastal dynamics (INQUA CMP)



Keynote Speakers: Professor Atholl Anderson, Dr. Matt McGlone, Associate Professor Phil Shane

Discounted hotel suites (multiple occupancy with separate bedrooms and a shared bathroom) have been reserved for $110 per night. A discounted rate of $75 is available for students (three per apartment).

Post conference trips 11-16 December (limited spots available for each trip, run on interest)



Trip 1: Kauri and the Quaternary (a loop around the sub-tropical Northland/Far North region starting and ending in Auckland; Three nights in Bay of Islands, two nights at Kai Iwi Lakes). The trip will focus on ancient kauri, palaeoecology/palaeoclimate, and coastal barrier evolution from OIS5-present. Estimated base costs per person - $650 NZD (includes accommodation and transport return to Auckland)



Trip 2: Quaternary environmental change and volcanism (excursion south from Auckland through the Waikato, the central North Island and ending in Wellington; Three nights in Rotorua/Taupo, two nights in Palmerston North). This trip will include volcanism, tephras, loess, peat, cosmogenic dating and palaeoclimate. Estimated base costs per person - $850 NZD (includes accommodation and transport from Auckland to Wellington)
