Dear colleagues,

We are looking for a PhD candidate for our research group here at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany. Please circulate widely!

The Research Group in Terrestrial Palaeoclimates at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry focusses on the interactions between climate and landscapes in Central Asia over the last few million years. Essential to this work is establishing quantitative estimates of climatic change in the region. For this, organic geochemistry methods, including the calibration and investigation of various biomarkers as recorders of past temperature and precipitation, plays a critical role.

We invite applications for a

PhD candidate in PALAEOCLIMATE RECONSTRUCTION

(ORGANIC GEOCHEMISTRY)

The aim of the project is to develop novel new geochemical approaches for quantitative palaeoclimate reconstruction in the Eurasian loess. The position will include study design and methodological development, field sampling, laboratory processing and analysis, and publication. The candidate will work closely with scientists and laboratory facilities within the Department for Climate Geochemistry at MPI-C.

This position will begin in summer-autumn 2017. The candidate will receive full funding for 3 years with an optional fourth year as required. The candidate will complete a cumulative thesis of scientific papers. Applicants must have completed a MSc degree (or equivalent) before the starting date, and will ideally have prior experience in an aspect of geochemistry, preferably palaeoclimate reconstruction.

The Max Planck Society wishes to increase the number of female coworkers, and applications by women are particularly encouraged. The Max-Planck-Society has set itself the objective of employing more people with disabilities. Applications from people with disabilities are expressly encouraged.

Applications, including cover letter, curriculum vitae, reprints of any publications, a short statement of research interests, and the names of three referees should be sent by email. For further information please contact Dr. Kathryn Fitzsimmons (k.fitzsimmons at mpic.de<mailto:k.fitzsimmons at mpic.de>).

Review of the applications will begin 07.08.2017.
