Dear AQUA colleagues,

Please find below and here<https://sciences.adelaide.edu.au/events/list/2020/earth-sciences-seminars-2020> details of University of Adelaide Earth Sciences seminars that may be of interest. Upcoming seminars of interest to Quaternarists include Mike Morley from Flinders and Zoe Thomas (UNSW)

This Friday we have another excellent Earth Science seminar:

The speaker is Dr Jon Tyler from the University of Adelaide who will be giving a talk entitled:

Climate-water interactions over decades to millennia: refining lessons from the past to address an uncertain future

Jon will be presenting live in the Mawson Lecture Theatre starting at 3:10pm, but the seminar will also be available on zoom.

Here are the details for the zoom access:

ABSTRACT: Records of past climate variability play an important role in setting the context for contemporary and future change. Such data contribute to efforts to predict and plan for future climate extremes, including major droughts, floods and fire, in addition to assessing the consequences of future climate for terrestrial and aquatic systems. However, records of past climate variability are not without limitations: (1) they are still geographically biased to the Northern Hemisphere; (2) they are heavily weighted towards the recent few centuries; (3) they are uncertain in terms of their chronologies and in their interpretive framework; and (4) they are poorly represented when it comes to understanding the hydrological cycle in the context of past climate change. In this context, I'll discuss recent efforts to address these limitations from a global and regional (Australian) perspective. Firstly, I'll report initial findings by the PAGES Iso2k working group on a global compilation of water isotope records for the last 2000 years, which provide new insights into the global water cycle during a period of marked temperature change. Secondly, I'll focus on climate-lake interactions in south-eastern Australia and discuss the progress, potential and challenges in assessing Australia's hydrological future using lake sediment geochemistry.
