Asian Art Talk: Artist's Perspective
Chun Kwang-young discusses his series "Aggregation"
DATE: 27 February 2003
TIME: 3.30pm
VENUE: Asian Art Galleries, National Gallery of Australia

Chun Kwang-young is a leading Korean contemporary artist. Based in Seoul,
since 1994 he has worked on a series entitled "Aggregations". All of these
works centre on the use of mulberry paper, a material that is integral to
Korean culture. The images are large, dense three dimensional aggregations
of triangular shapes wrapped in mulberry paper book pages and tied with
string. This basic form is reminiscent of the bundles of herbal medicines
found in the traditional medicine shops that were a familiar part of the
artist's childhood.

Chun Kwang-young combines thousands of these individual pieces to make his
compelling constructions. While the compositional elements are random -
the triangles are of various sizes and the paper is of differing shades -
they are arranged in a highly formalised manner reflecting the lasting
influence of his exposure to minimalism while working in America during
the early 1970s.

Chun Kwang-Young will talk about his "Aggregations" series including
"Aggregation 001-MA 012", the 2001 work acquired by the National Gallery
of Australia.
