This presentation examines how charismatic leaders have acted as the vehicles for the evolutionary development of modern Islamist radicalism and militancy. At a micro-level, this seminar explores the complex drivers behind the rise and appeal of charismatic figures such as Sayyid Qutb, Abdullah Azzam, Osama Bin Laden and Anwar al-Awlaki. At a macro-level, it traces the transformative charisma phenomenon in Islamist radicalism and militancy – a form of routinisation that produces complex chains of charismatic leaders, each of whom emerge in part by building on the charismatic capital of their predecessors – from the Islamist modernists of the late-1800s through the 20th century and into the 21st century. Moreover, this research demonstrates the potential utility of charismatic leadership theory as a powerful analytical paradigm that brings into acute focus, perhaps more than any other conceptual framework, nuances critical to understanding the rise of radical and militant movements. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><i><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>About the Speaker <o:p></o:p></span></i></p><p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-AU style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";mso-fareast-language:EN-AU'>Haroro is a Visiting Fellow with the Department of Political and Social Change. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Details of forthcoming and recent PSC seminars, workshops and conferences can be found at <b><a href="http://ips.cap.anu.edu.au/psc/seminars.php">http://ips.cap.anu.edu.au/psc/seminars.php</a></b><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Julie Fitzgibbon<br>Departmental Administrator<br>Department of Political and Social Change<br>School of International, Political and Strategic Studies (IPS)<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>College of Asia and the Pacific<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Hedley Bull Centre (#130)<br>The Australian National University<br>Canberra ACT 0200 Australia<br><br>T: +61 2 6125 4790<br>F: +61 2 6125 5523<br>email: <a href="mailto:psc.admin@anu.edu.au">psc.admin@anu.edu.au</a><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p></div></body></html>
