Subject: NIE: The changing atmosphere in 2005 - public lecture by Nobel
Prize winner
What does the future hold for the Earth? The answer includes rising sea
levels, changing rainfall patterns, bigger and more frequent storms...
and that's just the beginning.
The chemical composition of the atmosphere has been changing steadily
over the last century and the Earth is responding with warmer
temperatures.
Major warming has already been observed during the past two decades in
the polar North where the effects are expected to be especially severe.
Professor F. Sherwood Rowland, who shared the 1995 Nobel Prize in
Chemistry, will be discussing the Earth's changing atmosphere and the
global consequences at a free public lecture in Canberra.
He is a passionate scientist and an enlightening speaker who will answer
your questions on the ozone layer, global warming and other climatic
changes.
Professor Rowland is currently the Donald Bren Research Professor of
Chemistry and Earth System Science at the University of California
Irvine.
He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American
Philosophical Society and the American Academy of Arts and Science. He
is also a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a Former President
of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
