The Collaboration on Atmospheric Environment and Health is pleased to
announce...

A SHORTCOURSE IN SPATIAL ANALYSIS IN ENVIRONMENTAL EPIDEMIOLOGY

19 - 22 September 2005.
ANU Campus, Canberra.

AIM
This 4 day short course will provide training in new public health
research methods for spatial and temporal analysis, specifically in the
field of Environmental Epidemiology. The course aims to improve
participants' language and software skills to enable them to better
liaise with geographic information systems (GIS) experts, and to enhance
communication between the public health sector and GIS Practitioners. In
addition it will also enable participants to carry out spatial analysis
using the statistical software 'R'.

TOPICS COVERED
- introduction - what are GIS and what do they offer
- introduction to basic statistics and 'R'
- getting started: obtaining linking spatial data, mapping and
visualisation
- modelling with point locations
- making surfaces: interpolation with GIS
- modelling in three dimensions
- modelling in four dimensions:space-time exposure assessment
- discussion of different methodological techniques
- Hands on, practical sessions in the computer lab
- case studies and software demonstrations
