Applications for the 2009-10 round of AusAID's Human Rights Small Grants Scheme are now open.

Applications are open to non-government organisations and human rights institutions in developing countries for projects that promote and protect human rights.

The Scheme is a valuable way that Australia helps build the capacity of civil society and non-government organisations in developing countries to protect and promote human rights at the grassroots level.

This year, the grants scheme has expanded its geographical focus to include all of Africa and Latin America, in addition to the Asia-Pacific, Caribbean and Middle East. This will provide opportunities for organisations in more countries to participate.

Grants range from between AUD$20,000 and AUD$100,000 for one-year projects. Projects of up to AUD$150,000 over two years will also be considered. Applications must be submitted by 2 October 2009.

Successful grants will be announced by the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs on Human Rights Day, 10 December 2009.
