Between Connections: Timor Leste, Indonesia and Australia

The works in this exhibition explore the inter-relations and
inter-connections between artists and the societies in which they live in
Timor Leste, Indonesia and Australia. The Culture Kitchen (consisting of Jon
Priadi, Julian Laffan, Bernie Slater and Angie Bexley) have worked alongside
the collectives of Taring Padi (based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia) and Gembel
(based in Dili, Timor Leste) to create a visual dialogue expressing their
concerns about environmental destruction, political sabotage and social
justice; all issues that act to both divide and unite the three nations.

The Exhibition opening will take place in the School of Art Gallery on
Wednesday 28 January 2009 from 6.30pm. The exhibition will be opened by
Angie Bexley, PhD Scholar at the Research School of Asia and the Pacific at
ANU. Her interest is in Indonesia-East Timor relations through the lives of
the younger generation of East Timorese both in East Timor and Indonesia.
She hopes to some day return to live in the hills of Kaliurang and work on
artistic and cultural exchange programs between the two nations.

This exhibition is part of Asia Pacific Week 2009.
